Signs That You Need Water Filtration

Nov 07, 2016

There have been a number of highly visible news stories lately about the poor water quality in some areas of the country. While the specific types of contamination issues vary from case to case, they have highlighted an important fact: your water is not always 100% clean. Even with extensive municipal water treatment, it is likely that you will end up with some contaminants in your water supply. What matters is knowing when to take steps to protect yourself from those contaminants.

Taste

There are relatively few places where it can be said that tap water actually tastes good. There’s always something in it that tastes just a little bit off from where it should be. However, the taste test we’re talking about here is of a more extreme variety. Be vigilant for anything tasting strongly metallic or bitter in your tap water, as it could indicate the presence of more serious elemental contaminants.

Discoloration

It should go without saying that your water shouldn’t be turning all the colors of the rainbow under normal circumstances. However, sometimes temporary discoloration is more of a plumbing issue and less of a water supply issue. For example, brief spurts of red or brown water after turning on a faucet might mean that you have a rusty pipe somewhere in your plumbing system. If the water is turning orange, green, or any other odd color continuously, then you may have a serious problem. It’s a good idea to call a professional at that point.

Water Filtration Systems

Water filtration systems are designed to protect your home’s water supply from contaminants of all kinds. A water filtration system is typically installed in the water line, so that all water flowing into the home passes through it first. Talk to your plumber about the best water filter for your needs.
