Remember to Schedule Water Heater Maintenance This Winter

Nov 14, 2016

Winter is coming, and you’re probably preoccupied with a million different things right now. Holiday plans, weather concerns, election anxieties, etc. It’s almost guaranteed that you will forget about something or other this winter. Just make sure that something isn’t water heater maintenance.

Prevention vs Cure

Water heaters are incredibly important systems. In fact, one of the biggest consumers of energy in the average home is the water heater. This is because water heaters often see use multiple times a day, all year-round, which also generates a lot of wear and tear on the system. All of that strain makes issues more likely, which is why maintenance is necessary.

Chances are, you’re not going to recognize a problem with your water heater until it’s been around for a while, at which point it will be too late to prevent the majority of the damage. Preventive maintenance is used to catch developing problems with your water heater before they have a chance to really cause a lot of trouble. For example, tank water heaters are often flushed out to see if there are any lime scale deposits inside. If so, they are removed and steps can be taken to prevent them in the future. You can save hundreds or thousands of dollars in repair costs over the life of your water heater by scheduling this at least once a year.

There is no single “ideal” time to schedule maintenance for a water heater, as opposed to climate control systems that go through seasons of more or less use. If you haven’t had it done in the last year, though, there’s no time like the present. You’ll be very glad you did, in the end.
