The Benefits of Sump Pumps

Aug 01, 2016

When people think of flood damage as relates to their home, they tend to imagine massive, catastrophic waters submerging part or all of it. While it’s true that such massive floods pose a huge problem in some areas of the country, you don’t have to be confronted with that level of flood waters to be threatened by them. Most flooding damage involves just one or two areas of the home, basements and crawl spaces. For times like those, the best thing you can do is make use of a sump pump. Let’s take a look at sump pumps, and the benefits they provide.

What is a Sump Pump?

A sump pump is a system designed to protect a single area of the home from flooding. A pit is dug at the lowest point of the room. This is called the sump. All water that enters the room will naturally flow downhill and into the sump. The sump pump is then installed either in or directly above the sump. A pipe is run from the sump pump through the wall and out of the house, in order to provide a means to get the collected water out of the room. When the water level in the sump reaches a certain point, the sump pump activates and pumps the water out of the house.

Advantages of Sump Pumps

Even a small amount of water damage can cost thousands of dollars to fix, depending on where it is located. If you have an area of your home that is especially vulnerable to flooding, like a basement or anything below ground level, it’s a good idea to install a sump pump as a preventive measure. If the system stops your home from flooding just once or twice, it will have paid for itself in savings.
