The best way to catch plumbing problems before they have the chance to cause damage is to schedule annual plumbing maintenance and inspection services. In between those appointments, though, you should still keep an eye out for issues that may develop. Have a look at some of the following plumbing problems to be especially careful of.
Limescale is a kind of mineral deposit that forms as the result of long-term exposure to hard water. Hard water is just water with high levels of calcium and magnesium in it, and is common in certain geographic areas throughout the United States. As limescale builds up on the walls of the pipes, it will restrict the flow of water through the system. This lowers the plumbing system’s efficiency, decreasing water pressure and generally making it difficult to use the system. If the limescale is not cleaned out quickly enough, it will harden and become all-but-impossible to remove. This often means that the affected pipes will need to be replaced.
In order to spot limescale before it reaches the point of no return, keep an eye out for falling water pressure in your plumbing system over time. You should also call for plumbing repairs if you notice a white film or chalky substance around your faucets, or in your shower, as limescale in those areas will almost certainly indicate limescale in the pipes.
Any plumbing system will always have issues with leaks. Some will be massive and easy to spot, probably because they’ll burst from your walls and flood part of your home or something. Some will be small, and will possibly go unnoticed for months until they have the opportunity to cause widespread water damage. As far as preventing leaks goes, all you can really do is rely on preventive maintenance appointments. If you want to detect leaks soon after they start, though, there are a couple things you can do.
You can try turning off all the plumbing appliances in your home, and then take a look at your water meter. If the meter is still running, then you might have a leak in your home. You should also keep an eye on your monthly water bills, as a sudden spike might indicate that you have a leak in your system. Finally, you should always have a plumber check out any areas in your home with visible water damage. That almost certainly means that you have a leak in the area.
