Anyway, we aren’t kidding. Water softening is actually very important for homes across the country, though not all of them. Specifically, it’s a big deal for homes that happen to be located in geographic regions where there is a lot of hard water. Let’s go over hard water, limescale, water softening, and why you should care about any and all of it.
You may have heard the term “hard water” before, but a lot of people still don’t know what exactly the term refers to. Hard water is water with high levels of calcium and magnesium particles in it. These particles are not harmful to your health. In fact, you likely absorb them from various sources (like your food) all the time. The real issue with hard water is not the effect it has on you personally, but what it can do to your pipes.
Hard water causes a buildup of deposits of those minerals into what is called limescale , and this is where the real problem lies. Limescale will build up and build up in plumbing systems that have hard water in them until it becomes severe enough to restrict the flow of water through the system. The more the limescale is allowed to build up in the system, the more the water pressure and general efficiency of your plumbing system will drop as a result. Even worse, limescale will eventually harden if it isn’t removed quickly enough. If your pipes have a bunch of hardened limescale in them, then you’ll pretty much have to replace the entire affected pipe sections to get rid of the scale. This is why it’s so important to address limescale proactively, and why water softening is important.
A water softener is a device, often installed in the water line, which acts as a filter for the specific particles that cause hard water. As the water flows into the filter, the calcium and magnesium particles are neutralized by one of several different softening methods (depending on the system.) A water softener is the single best way to make sure that the plumbing system in your home is protected from the effects of hard water. Not sure whether or not you even have hard water in your home? Contact a plumber and ask for your water to be tested. After that, your plumber will be able to advise you on whether or not to install a new water softener in your home, and what kind to install.
