Got a Plumbing Emergency? Follow These Steps

May 28, 2018

When a plumbing emergency happens, the number one thing you need to do is keep calm. If you panic, you’re just going to make things worse. So, if you have a burst pipe spewing water into your hallways or some other kind of plumbing emergency, keep calm and follow the steps below to get it taken care of as quickly as possible.

Step One: Turn Off The Water!

Water damage is the main issue you need to worry about with any plumbing problem. The only difference with plumbing emergencies is that they tend to be able to cause more water damage in a shorter amount of time. So, the first thing you need to do when you notice a plumbing emergency in your system is to turn off the water as soon as possible. No water flowing to the problem area means no further water damage while you wait for a plumber to arrive. It’s best that you know ahead of time where your water valve is, as they are not standardized between houses and you don’t want to run around looking for yours while your home turns into a swamp.

Step Two: Mop Up the Area

This may seem like a minor thing, but it can actually prevent a lot of water damage if you act quickly enough. Once you have the water turned off, you’re going to want to mop up any water that may have already spilled and remove any susceptible furniture or other items from the area. This may seem like a minor thing, but it’s actually pretty beneficial. It saves you some money by limiting the damage the spilled water can cause, and it makes it easier to access the issue itself, which might decrease the amount of time it takes your plumber to resolve the issue.

Step Three: Call for Emergency Plumbing Services

Once you’ve shut off the water and cleared the area, there is little else you can do aside from call for emergency plumbing services. Not all plumbing contractors even offer such services, so make sure that you have the best contractor you can find to handle any plumbing emergencies you may have. Once you’ve completed this last step, just sit back and wait for your plumber to take care of the issue for you.
