Signs That You Need a New Water Heater

Jul 18, 2016

Water heaters can last a very long time, provided that you take proper care of them. Even with the best repairs and maintenance, however, no water heater can last forever. Eventually, the system will wear down enough that you will have to replace it. Let’s take a look at some of the signs that you need a new water heater, so that you can replace it before it dies completely.

Loss of Output

Any water heater is going to be overwhelmed at some point, if you put it under enough demand for long enough. The older a water heater gets, though, the more worn out it’s going to get. The amount of demand that the system can handle will slowly drop, until it struggles to provide enough water for even a quick shower. If your water heater seems to be significantly weaker than it once was, it may be because you need a new one.

Frequent Repairs

As a water heater nears the end of its life, the amount of wear and tear on its various parts will cause them to start failing in rapid succession. Needing repairs every few years is normal. Needing repairs every few months is a clear indication that your water heater is on its last proverbial legs. You should have a professional examine it to determine how soon you’re going to need a new one.

Age

A water heater typically lasts between 10 and 20 years, depending on individual circumstances. Past that point, it becomes much more likely to develop problems like those listed above. You can maintain a water heater that’s older than two decades, but you’ll be spending a lot more money to do it than if you had simply installed a new one.
