Water heaters last a long time, but they are not eternal. Sooner or later, you’re going to need to replace your water heater no matter how well you’ve taken care of it. It’s especially important that you evaluate your system now, as strain can increase during the winter. You don’t want to suddenly find yourself without hot water in the middle of winter, do you? Any water heater is going to be exhausted if you put it under enough demand for long enough. However, a water heater’s output will also drop as it gets older and wears out. If your water heater seems like it can’t keep up with even a moderate amount of demand anymore, then it’s time to replace it.

All systems need repairs on occasion, even if they’re not that old. Older systems are more worn out, though, and thus are more prone to issues. If you need to repair your water heater multiple times a year, it’s a pretty clear indication that you need a new system.

Water heaters are manufactured to last around 10-15 years on average. Once a water heater gets older than that, it will gradually become more and more prone to issues like those we have outlined here.
