Why Sump Pump Maintenance is a Good Idea

Dec 12, 2016

Winter is one of those seasons where you’re more likely to have problems with flooding, especially in basements and crawl spaces. If you’ve dealt with this problem before, chances are that you already have a sump pump installed in one or more of those vulnerable areas. Keep in mind, however, that you shouldn’t just have a sump pump installed and forget about it. Sump pumps need maintenance just as much as any other system, especially during this time of year.

Maintenance and Prevention

A lot of people wait to call for service for their heaters or air conditioners until they actually notice a problem with it. This isn’t a good idea, since problems tend to develop in those systems long before they give off any warning signs. However, it typically is pretty apparent that your HVAC system is suffering, once it does develop a problem. Sump pumps, though, are a bit different.

You don’t use your sump pump all the time, maybe 1-3 times a year maximum (barring extraordinary circumstances). What that means is that if and when a sump pump develops a problem, you probably won’t be able to tell at all until it’s too late. Sump pumps are emergency systems. If they don’t work when they’re supposed to, it can cause a whole lot of trouble for you. You don’t want a flooded basement to be the first sign that your sump pump is not operating properly. That’s why you need preventive maintenance.

Preventive sump pump maintenance lets your technician closely examine your system, find any problems with it, and fix them before they have the chance to cause real damage. You can save thousands of dollars in repair and water remediation costs by doing this at least once a year.
