Why Your Water Heater Isn’t Providing Hot Water

Jan 23, 2017

The Pilot Light is Out

This one is quickly becoming a thing of the past, as more and more water heater manufacturers stop using standing pilot lights . For millions of people, though, this little gas flame near the bottom of the tank is what ignites the burner assembly to start heating the water. Every time the water in the tank drops below the set temperature, the pilot light is what causes the system to activate and reheat it. If the pilot light is out, chances are simply relighting it will solve the problem. If the pilot light won’t light, or keeps going out, then there might be a more serious problem that needs to be dealt with.

There are Sediment Deposits in the Tank

Unlike the pilot light, you won’t be able to check this one yourself. Tap water always contains some level of minerals in it, which is mostly harmless. Over years, though, these minerals can start forming deposits on the bottom of the storage tank. If the home has a problem with hard water, this becomes much more likely. If the sediment is allowed to build up enough, then it can actually serve as a kind of insulating agent, preventing the heat from the burner assembly from reaching the water. The way to confirm this is to have a professional flush the tank to remove any sediment. If the sediment buildup is quite advanced, it may need to be manually scraped out .

Clogged Burner Jets

If you’re using a gas water heater, then the system is relying on a part called the burner assembly in order to generate heat. The assembly does this by combusting natural gas, which generates heat, but also creates a number of combustion byproducts. One of these byproducts is carbon, which collects on the burner assembly over time. If the carbon is not ever cleaned off, it can eventually clog the burner assembly so badly that the jets can’t ignite the flow of gas. This is a serious issue for the water heater, but it’s also a serious health hazard as it allows gas to stream into the space around the system. Professional cleaning should take care of the clogs, and allow the assembly to function again.
