Things To Consider When Building An Inground Pool

Sep 29, 2020

As we move into the fall season, you undoubtedly have a mind full of football and hot wings, mugs of steaming apple cider next to a small campfire, or enjoying the red, yellow and orange-hued leaves during a relaxing hike or drive. But what if I told you that fall is one of the most opportune times to focus your energy on your inground pool construction project?

Yep. You read that right.
As the weather cools off, it is most advantageous to get started on building your dream pool. There’s a few reasons that taking action late in the year works in your favor. One of them being the year-end deals and discounts many pool retainers offer to get as much inventory out the door as possible as their busy season winds down. Finding a talented contractor with an open schedule is much easier in the off-season, so getting your pool installed will likely be much quicker than in the summer months.
And, perhaps the best reason: if you install your inground pool in the fall you won’t have to sacrifice your beautiful summer days to a loud construction site and your pool will be ready to be enjoyed!

Before you start making phone calls to negotiate the backyard oasis of a lifetime, it’s important that you consider a few things first. First, and most importantly, check your local city zoning laws and make sure that your project will be compliant of any pool zoning ordinances long before you break ground.

How To Decide on A Type of Pool

Making the decision to buy and install an inground pool comes with many more options and choices than one might realize. It’s imperative when planning to fund a pool installation project that you get a pool that fits your needs perfectly. Here’s some points that can help you get started in the right direction.

When shopping for pools, you’ll see three common types: fiberglass, vinyl-lined and concrete. They all have their pros and cons and, ultimately, choosing the right one for you will be a matter of personal preference.

Concrete Pools

Concrete pools are the most expensive of the three and installation is known to be lengthy (anywhere from 3-12 weeks), but concrete can be molded to whatever shape or size pool you desire and comes with easy renovations if you choose to enlarge, rebuild, or update your inground pool. This material will also offer the most durability and longevity for your buck.

Vinyl-Lined Pools

Vinyl pools are a popular choice that also comes with several choices of shapes; the most common being rectangular and L-shaped, but some freeform vinyl linings are flexible and can be customized within reason. Installation takes less time with this material, but when considering longevity, it’s best to install a vinyl liner that is at least 20 millimeters thick as a thinner liner can easily be torn or punctured.

Fiberglass Pools

Fiberglass pools are the least expensive inground pool material option. They are also popular because of their durability due to a non-porous gel-coat finish that covers the fiberglass. Installation with this type of pool is also a breeze and only takes an average of three days to install. The installation requires the use of a crane to place the pool, so when choosing this material for your inground pool, make sure that your yard is spacious enough for the crane to maneuver in and is free of overhead power lines.

Setting a Budget

When setting a budget for your inground pool project, it’s important to factor in the additional expenses of retaining walls, landscaping and fencing, dirt hauling, costs of electric heat pumps or pool lights, or any features you may want added to your inground pool.
