Have a Look at Why It’s a Good Idea to Have a Sump Pump

Mar 19, 2018

A much more common form of flooding is due to water seeping into basements and crawlspaces during more mild storms. The water finds its way into the space, but it collects there instead of flowing out. You can imagine how much damage even a few inches of water in a space like your basement could do, especially if it houses systems like your heater and air conditioner. It’s areas like these that could benefit from installing a sump pump.

Advantages of a Sump Pump

A sump pump is a system designed to protect a space from mild-to-moderate flooding. It consists of a sump, which is a pit dug at the lowest point of the room it’s going to be protecting, and the pump itself. The pump is typically installed either in the sump or directly above it, with a pipe connected to it that runs out of the house. As water enters the room, it flows downhill into the sump. Once the sump collects enough water, the sump pump will activate and pump the collected water out of the home.

Sump pumps are a great idea for any home that has rooms and other important spaces belowground, especially in areas where it rains frequently. You’re not going to find many sump pumps in Southern California, but plenty of homeowners take advantage of them out here. That’s because they protect against a very common problem: that plenty of homes built in this area don’t have a way to keep their subterranean spaces dry during a storm.

Anyone who’s had to pay for water damage remediation knows that even a small amount can cost thousands of dollars to fix. This is especially true if it’s located in an area where it affects other systems. Sump pumps help protect your home by removing the possibility significant water damage due to storm runoff or other moderate flooding factors. It won’t be able to protect against severe flooding, of course. Still, during a more severe storm you probably have much more to worry about than a flooded basement.

Sump pumps are not typically put to frequent use, but they don’t have to be in order to be cost effective. Even if the sump pump only activates a handful of times over the years, it can save you more than enough money in repair costs to pay for itself.
