Lime scale is the result of long term exposure to hard water, which contains high levels of magnesium and calcium. As the hard water flows through your plumbing system, it deposits small amounts of these minerals on the pipe walls. These mineral deposits build up over time into lime scale, which restricts the flow of water through the system. You may not be able to see the lime scale in your pipes, but you can still check in other areas. Look at your faucets, bathtub, and shower. See if you can find any white, chalky areas.
