Install a Water Filtration System if You Notice These Symptoms

Jul 10, 2017

Visible Lime Scale Deposits

Lime scale is the result of long term exposure to hard water, which contains high levels of magnesium and calcium. As the hard water flows through your plumbing system, it deposits small amounts of these minerals on the pipe walls. These mineral deposits build up over time into lime scale, which restricts the flow of water through the system. You may not be able to see the lime scale in your pipes, but you can still check in other areas. Look at your faucets, bathtub, and shower. See if you can find any white, chalky areas. That’s lime scale, and if you have it in those areas you almost certainly have it in your pipes. Talk to a professional about installing a water softener to protect against lime scale.

Odd Tastes

Nobody really likes the taste of their tap water, even if it is potable. There’s a difference between tap water that doesn’t taste great, though, and tap water that tastes wrong. Take notice if your water suddenly starts to taste metallic, overly salty, or has any other flavor that indicates something is wrong with it. If your tap water does suddenly start to taste odd, call a professional and have your water tested to see if you need water filtration.

Weird Colors

Tap water may have a slight tint, depending on where it’s being drawn from. That does not mean that you should ignore it if your home’s water is turning bright rainbow colors, though. Cloudy brown or red water tends to indicate the presence of rust somewhere in the system. Blue, green, and yellow are also common colors to watch out for, none of which mean anything good.

Preventive Water Filtration

Even if you have no obvious warning signs present, there’s still a chance that you have small amounts of contaminants in your water. There are no safe levels of exposure for materials like lead, so it might be a good idea to install a water filtration system just to be safe. If you’re not sure which water filtration system is best for your needs, consult with a professional.
