Signs You Need to Schedule Drain Cleaning Services

Slow Drainage

Drain clogs are the single biggest issue that you’re likely to deal with regarding your drain and sewer system. Clogs often form slowly, as waste builds up on the drain pipe walls. As the clog builds towards the center of the pipe, it will restrict the flow of water more and more. If you notice that one of your drains is draining more slowly than it normally does, then it probably means that a clog is forming in the pipe. You should schedule drain cleaning services immediately, before the pipe has a chance to clog completely.

Bad Smells

This symptom is more common with kitchen drains, which have to deal with food waste quite a bit. Other drains can have this symptom as well, though. If a bad smell is coming out of one of your drains, it might be due to particularly bad waste buildup in the pipe. You should know, though, that bad smells coming out of multiple drains could indicate that you have a problem deeper in your sewer system. Drain cleaning may not be able to deal with that kind of issue.

Annual Maintenance

Even if you don’t notice any warning signs that your drains are in need of repairs, it’s a good idea to schedule professional drain cleaning services at least once a year. Because drain clogs tend to develop slowly, preventive drain cleaning will often clean out waste buildup that would eventually have caused substantial problems. Plumbing systems don’t have seasons when they’re under more strain than at others, as climate control systems do. So, it’s not terribly important that you schedule drain cleaning services during a specific season. What’s more important is that you schedule it consistently from year to year.

Methods Used for Drain Cleaning

There are two major drain cleaning methods that pretty much every plumber is going to use. The first is drain snaking, which involves using a long cord with an auger on the end of it. The drain snake is inserted into the pipe until it meets a clog. Then, the auger drills through the clog to free up the flow of water through the pipe.

Hydro jetting uses a high pressure stream of water to blast all collected waste out of the drain pipe. The hose is outfitted with an omnidirectional sprayer head, allowing it to thoroughly clean out the entire drain pipe. This is especially useful for both removing current clogs, and for preventing clogs from forming in the future.
