What Qualifies as a Plumbing Emergency?

Nov 27, 2017

Water Damage

By far, the number one factor in determining what qualifies as a plumbing emergency is how much water damage it can cause in a short amount of time. If you have a crack in your toilet bowl, for example, it could flood the entire surrounding area in a couple of hours (depending on how large the crack is). You do not want to wait for an appointment to deal with something like that, because it will result in you paying thousands of dollars not only fixing the problem itself, but remediating all of the water damage that the problem causes.

Severe Malfunction

Of course, not all plumbing emergencies are capable of massive amounts of water damage. Sometimes, emergency plumbing issues are simply issues that make it impossible for you to use part or all of your plumbing system at all. If your toilet was simply not getting any water at all, for example, you would probably want to fix that sooner rather than later. Everybody needs a working bathroom, after all. If a vital part of your plumbing system that you use on a daily basis breaks down, and you can’t easily make do without it for a couple of days while waiting for an appointment, it’s a good idea to call for emergency plumbing services.

What to Do About It

If it’s simply a case of a part of your plumbing system not working at all, then all you need to do is call up your trusted emergency plumbing contractor. If your upper floor is rapidly becoming a swamp thanks to a ruptured pipe, though, there are some more immediate actions you should take before calling for repairs. The best thing you can do for that is turn off the water. No water flowing to the pipe means no more water damage beyond what’s already been caused. This doesn’t solve the problem, of course, but it does stop the issue from getting worse. That done, you should mop up the area as best you can before calling your plumber. It may seem like a pretty minor thing, but in situations like these, every little bit helps.
