How to Tell if You Have a Plumbing Leak

Aug 07, 2017

Dropping Water Pressure

If the leak is large enough, it may cause a drop in water pressure before you start to notice other obvious signs. The severity of the leak will determine how quickly you lose water pressure, and how much you lose. Any loss of water pressure is not a good thing, though. If you start to notice this sign, it’s a good idea to call for repairs as soon as you can. It’s also possible that something is blocking the flow of water, but you’ll need a professional to determine which is which.

Rising Water Bills

Even if you don’t notice any kind of dropping water pressure, you might be able to see a marked rise in your monthly water bills. If your bills start rising from month to month, even if you aren’t actually using more water than you normally do, it’s a sign that you might have a leak in the system. It’s a good idea to have a plumber check out your system if you notice this sign, just to make sure everything is working properly.

Check the Water Meter

A pretty good way to check if your plumbing system has a leak somewhere is to have a look at your water meter. Turn off all the plumbing appliances in your home, then check your water meter. If the meter is still running, it means that water is still leaving the system, which means you probably have a leak somewhere.

Puddles in the Yard

This is definitely one of the more serious symptoms you need to pay attention to. Your water line is the pipe that runs under your yard to your home. All water that flows into your plumbing system runs through the water pipe to get there. If a leak develops in the water line, the water that escapes will often bubble up through the ground and form pools in the yard. If you have pools forming in your front or back yard, and they don’t seem to have any obvious cause, it’s a good idea to call a plumber. You definitely don’t want to wait on this one, though. A problem with the water line has the potential to cause issues for the entire plumbing system. The longer you wait, the more potential exists for things to get worse.
