If you’re not sure whether or not you have a leak in your home, there are a couple of different steps you can take to help you confirm it. These are not as good as having a professional examine your system, but they should at least help you decide whether or not you need to call for professional repairs.
The first thing you should do is turn off all of the plumbing appliances in your home and check your water meter. If the meter is not running, then you likely do not have a leak in your home. If the meter is still running, though, then you might have a leak somewhere that needs to be dealt with.
If your water bills suddenly start to go up from month to month, even if you’re using roughly the same amount of water, then you might have a leak somewhere. Chances are, if the leak is large enough that the water lost to it is reflected in your monthly bills, then you should have a professional locate and patch it sooner rather than later. Even a small amount of water damage can be very expensive to fix.
If you start to notice water pressure declining in your home, then you could have a leak somewhere that is responsible for it. It’s also possible that you have a blockage forming somewhere in the system, but you’ll need a professional to examine it to tell for certain. You should be especially quick to call for professional plumbing services if water pressure is declining throughout the home. That could mean that the leak is located in your water line.
You obviously don’t want to wait to call for repairs until you take note of visible water damage anywhere in your home. Unfortunately, though, sometimes this really is the first warning sign that homeowners notice that their plumbing system is leaking. This is especially common with pinhole leaks, which are often too small to cause any of the above symptoms but can cause a lot of water damage over the course of months if they are not caught and dealt with during a maintenance appointment.
If you do happen to notice visible water damage in your home, don’t ignore it. Make sure that you have a professional plumber take a look at it to make sure it’s not more widespread, and to resolve whatever leak is causing it.
