Installing New Construction Plumbing Rough In

Sep 01, 2021

When a construction site is built and the next stage is plumbing, you might want to get on with the work yourself. However, installing plumbing and adding fixtures to a new property is not as simple as you might think.

Before anything is set in stone, the rough-in stage needs to be complete. The rough-in stage of construction is where a plumber identifies where every individual plumbing line in the house goes. Every single line needs to connect to the same drainage point, known as the stack.

When these lines are organized and installed, the rest of the construction can go ahead. During the rough-in stage, none of the fixtures are installed. It is just the pipes that are installed and connected to the right endpoint.

Why is rough-in plumbing important?

Rough-in plumbing is essential for ensuring that there will be no leaks or water going the wrong way. If a pipe is found to not be connected to the stack, then it could cause issues and potential leaks. The last thing a home owner wants is to move into a new property and find a huge leak after taking their first shower. Thus, it is important to get the plumbing right when fitting it to new construction buildings.

How to install plumbing to a new construction property

New buildings require modern plumbing in order to function efficiently. If you try and install old plumbing, you might find the functionality of the property does not reflect its modern design.

Before a plumber steps foot in the property, they will need to assess the local plumbing codes. They will know them all. Yet, depending on where you live, there might be a specific code of conduct to follow. All plumbing codes indicate how to install fixtures safely for that specific area.

The next stage is finalizing where you want the plumbing fixture to be. For instance, with new builds it is common for toilets and sinks to go in unusual places. The owner might want something specific. Thus, the plumbing needs to be assessed before committing to the area as pipelines not reach there nor be sufficient.

When the area that the fixture is going to go is complete and finalized, the next stage will be relying on your plumber to fit and design the dream setup. You may want a fancy toilet or shower . Thus, you might be eagerly waiting to see the finished results. Yet, don’t forget that the efficiency of the plumbing is much more important than the final look.

A leaky pipe might ruin the whole house. Whereas a toilet that is one inch too far to the left won’t make much difference at all. After installation, it will be time for the plumber to hook up the fixture to the pipes. This will be the real test and will help assess the water pressure and whether or not the pipes are working at their full potential and safely.

What to do after plumbing is complete in the new construction

When the rough-in is finalized and the project is complete, the next stage will be to install wet tiles around the plumbing. You will want to ensure to fit water-proof materials to enhance drainage and prevent rot. Clean all surfaces before installing the tiles to ensure that they efficiently stick and stay in place. Any dirt or damp behind tiles can cause rot and feature leaks.

Finish the tiling with sealant and your project will be complete.
