Do I Need to Have My Drains Cleaned?

May 23, 2016

The drains in your home serve a pretty important purpose: connecting your plumbing system to your sewer line. Despite their importance, though, most drains are neglected by homeowners who simply don’t know when they need professional services. Drain cleaning is one of the most important ways to keep your drains in good condition. Let’s take a look at some of the common signs that you should schedule professional drain cleaning services as soon as possible.

Slow Drainage

Drain clogs do not form all at once. Instead, they are created over time as waste sticks to the sides of the drain pipe and builds towards the center. The more waste builds towards the center of the pipe, the more slowly the drain will be able to drain. If you notice your drain starting to drain more slowly than it normally does, it probably means that you should schedule drain cleaning.

Bad Smells

If you have a horrible smell coming out of one of your drains, it almost certainly means that you need to schedule drain cleaning services. As waste builds up in the drain pipes, some of it may start to give off a stench after a while. This especially applies to kitchen drains, which deal with a lot of food waste. Keep in mind that if the smell is coming out of multiple drains at once, you may have a problem rooted further down in the sewer system.

It’s Been a While

Drain cleaning can be preventive just as much as reactive. If it’s been a couple of years since you’ve had your drains cleaned out, it’s not a bad idea to schedule drain cleaning services for them again. This will help prevent drain clogs from forming as easily in the future.
