"My Toilet Won't Stop Running!"

When your toilet runs constantly (water is constantly flowing into the tank through the fill valve), it wastes water and runs up your water bill. The problem is usually in the fill tank. Here is what to check for:

The water level in your toilet tank is dropping:

  • Check your flapper. If it's not sealing the flush valve opening, water from your tank will continually leak into the bowl and your toilet will run constantly to keep the tank filled. Replace your flapper as needed.

  • If your flapper appears to be in good shape or if replacing it doesn't solve the problem, you may need to replace the entire flush valve assembly, which can be found at your local hardware store.

The water level in the tank is high enough to spill into the overflow tube:

  • Your fill valve may need cleaning or replacing. If you have an older model fill valve or ballcock, this would be a good time to replace it with a new fill valve.

  • Debris in the fill valve can prevent the water shut-off mechanism from working correctly. Check manufacturer's instructions for cleaning out debris for your fill valve.

If you continue to see problems with a constant running toilet schedule a service with the plumbing experts at Lutz Plumbing, Inc.

Common Causes of Toilet Clogging

Clogged toilets are the most common type of toilet plumbing problem. This is often due to the fact that, while toilets are one of the most often used fixtures in the household, it’s often left underserved when it comes to maintenance.

To avoid future toilet clogs, you will need to understand what causes them in the first place. Some of the common causes for a clogged toilet are:

  • Hard Water
  • Overuse of Toilet Paper
  • Corroded Pipes
  • Foreign Object
  • Tree Roots Impacting Pipes

How to Unclog Your Toilet

At times, unclogging your toilet is a quick and inexpensive fix. A plunger and a few minutes of patience may be the only solution you need.

Step 1: Choose a good plunger. Make sure to use a flange toilet plunger rather than a sink plunger to remove a clog. Flange plungers have an accordion-like sleeve extension that helps with suction during clog removal.

Step 2: Use the proper technique. It’s best to start with a half-filled toilet bowl by adding or removing water where necessary. Begin by placing the plunger at a slight angle over the toilet drain and push in slowly to remove excess air from the flange. Plunge 5-10 times using both slow and more quick movements to dislodge the blockage.

Step 3: Steer clear of chemicals. If plunging doesn’t work, avoid resorting chemicals to clear your toilet trap, they can have a negative effect on your pipes and plumbing system.
