Whenever you hear about flooding in the Midwest, it’s often in the context of massive amounts of water. However, your entire home doesn’t have to be submerged in order for you to suffer flood damage. How Sump Pumps Work
A sump pump system begins with the digging of a pit at the lowest point of the room to be protected. This pit is called the sump. The sump pump is then installed either in or directly above the sump, with a pipe leading from the pump out of the house. When water enters the area, it will naturally flow downhill into the sump. Then, when the water level gets high enough, the sump pump will activate and pump all of the water out of the house.
The sump pump is obviously not large enough, or powerful enough, to prevent multiple areas of the home from flooding. However, it is still quite good at keeping the room in which it is installed dry. You can even install a battery backup sump pump to protect room or basement in case of a power outage.
The Advantages of Sump Pumps
As mentioned above, even a little bit of water damage in the wrong spot can cost you thousands of dollars in repairs. Not only are basements and crawlspaces more prone to flooding, due to their location, but they are also visited less frequently than other areas of the home. That means that without a sump pump, you’re less likely to catch flooding threats early.
With a sump pump, though, you never have to worry about minor flooding becoming a major problem. The pump is completely self–regulating; you don’t need to manually turn it on or off. All you need to do is make sure that it gets annual maintenance and prompt repairs when it develops an issue. That’s quite a bargain for the peace of mind of knowing your basement’s not going to flood any time soon.
Battery Backup Sump Pumps To The Rescue
An automatic battery backup sump pump will kick in to prevent a potential flooding disaster on your property. In case of power outages due to the weather, a battery backup comes in handy to keep working and reduce the risk of flooding in your basement or lower level area. This is a great solution for pump failure due to it’s age or heavy usage over a long period of time.
While it’s recommended to check your sump pump regularly, Lutz Plumbing, Inc. can test your sump pumps, offering to repair or replace it entirely. We often run great specials on our sump pump services, and our expert technicians get out to you fast! Lutz Plumbing’s battery backup sump pumps give you a backup plan in case of...well...backups! This is a very cost effective solution that will pay for itself over time.
