Tips on Keeping Your Plumbing System in Good Condition

plumber-wrenchYour home’s plumbing system is a vast and complex network of different appliances, linked together by many yards of pipes. It’s one of the systems that you rely on the most in your daily life. It can also be one of the most difficult to keep in proper shape, if you don’t know what do to. There are a number of steps you can take, though, to make sure that your plumbing system serves you well for many years to come. Have a look at our following tips on how to take proper care of your plumbing system.

Schedule Preventive Maintenance

Many of the problems that afflict plumbing systems don’t give off any warning signs early on in their development. Much of the time, homeowners don’t notice that their systems are even experiencing problems until they notice the damage those problems are causing. Of course, you want to stop plumbing issues long before they’re able to cause significant damage. The best way to do that is to schedule preventive maintenance.

Annual preventive maintenance appointments allow your plumber to closely examine every part of your plumbing system that might be susceptible to various problems. Video pipe inspection techniques are used to check the inside of your pipes, isolate any leaks or blockages, and repair them before they can get any worse. If you’re careful to consistently schedule preventive maintenance at least once a year, you can both cut down on plumbing repair costs and extend the effective lifespan of many parts of your plumbing system.

Call for Repairs When Necessary

There are many times when plumbing issues will crop up between maintenance appointments. While maintenance is certainly helpful for reducing problems, it cannot prevent them 100% of the time. You will almost certainly have to deal with some sort of problem at some point between maintenance work. When that happens, you need to make sure that you call for repairs as soon as possible. The sooner you have repairs done on your system, the better off it will be.

There are a number of warning signs that you should look for that indicate that your plumbing system is having problems, like:

  • Dropping Water Pressure: Unless your city is doing some work on the pipes, it’s not a good sign when you start to experience drops in water pressure. Steadily decreasing water pressure is might be because of lime scale or a leak. Sudden drops in water pressure are far more serious, and might be due to a major pipe rupture.
  • Unusually High Water Bills: Keep an eye on your monthly water bills from month to month, and take notice if it starts to climb for no apparent reason. It could be that water is leaving the plumbing system, even if you’re not using any plumbing appliances, which means you have a leak.

Any time you’re suspicious of a symptom with your plumbing system, it’s best to schedule repairs for it. Better safe than sorry.
