How to Choose the Right Plumber

One should never take any plumbing problem lightly or else it may compound the problem. A plumber can play an important part in getting you out of trouble. And when you have work done in your home or business, you literally have to live with the results, so choosing the right plumber means saving a lot of time and money.

So, when the time comes to call a plumbing contractor, make sure you choose a trained, full-time professional-not just someone who does this type of work on the side. Hiring an inexperienced plumber puts you at risk for poor workmanship that is not up to the required standards and you may end up paying a high price or there may be no guarantee for the work. Whatever size plumbing issue, big or small, consider the following checklist to rate a plumber before making a hiring decision.

  • Ask for references - The reputation of a plumber should be your primary concern. The most reliable and trusted way of choosing a plumber is by asking family and friends for references. It is important for you to know if the plumber is reliable, honest and competent to perform the plumbing job. If nobody from your friends or family knows a reliable plumber then the best alternative is to ask the plumbing service providers for their testimonials or references. Lutz Plumbing would be happy to assist you with this and you can even view some testimonials right here on our web site. Just click on the “Testimonials” tab above.

  • Check reputation - Call the local Better Business Bureau. Have any complaints been filed against the contractor?

  • Inquire about stability - How long has the contractor been in business? Ask about the firm's experience and the expertise of its staff.

  • Check local licenses and insurance - Many states and towns require that plumbing contractors be licensed to ensure that all health, safety and building codes are followed. Ask the contractor for his or her license number (Lutz Plumbing’s license number is 2383). Also, confirm insurance credentials. Ask to see proof that the contractor has both liability and worker's compensation insurance. If the contractor doesn't, you could be liable for any accidents on your property, including injury to the technician.

  • Ask for an estimate - To get an idea of the overall cost, ask for an estimate. Remember, however, that choosing a contractor should be based on more than just the lowest estimate. Quality of work counts too.

  • Warranty/Guarantee - If you get a good guarantee from the service provider, you will not be worried about looking for other plumbers or paying for the work to be done again. Lutz Plumbing has a 30 day warranty on all drain cleanings and a year on all other repairs/replacements. Some work even comes with a longer warranty depending on what is done. This includes drain and water re-pipes, etc. If you aren’t sure what warranty your work comes with, just ask one of our friendly technicians or office staff.

Plumbing is an important part of home maintenance, so you should look to hire an efficient, experienced and competitively priced plumber to get work done to your satisfaction!
